Fall home decorating is one of my favorite ways to make the house feel warm and cozy without completely redecorating.
Maybe it’s the pumpkins showing up everywhere, the beautiful autumn colors or simply the thought of cooler days ahead. Even though fall here in the desert can still mean some pretty warm afternoons, I love changing a few things around the house to make it feel like a new season has arrived.
And here’s the best part:
Fall home decorating doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.
A cozy throw, a few pillows, a beautiful wreath and some pumpkins can completely change the feeling of a room.
Here are seven of my favorite simple fall home decorating ideas you can try in your own home.
1. Start Your Fall Home Decorating With What You Have
Before you buy anything new, walk around your house.
Seriously!
Look for a wooden bowl, basket, vase, tray, candleholders or even a stack of pretty books that could move from one room to another.
I do this all the time.
Sometimes moving something you’ve had for years to a completely different spot makes it feel brand new.
Add a few pumpkins or some fall branches and suddenly you’ve created a seasonal display without spending much at all.
2. Add a Cozy Fall Throw
This may be the easiest fall decorating trick of all.
Take a soft throw and drape it over your favorite chair, the corner of your sofa or even the end of your bed.
For fall, I especially love cream, camel, rust and warm caramel colors.
You don’t have to change the furniture. One beautiful splash of fall color can change the entire feeling of a room.

Then make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down.

3. Change a Few Pillows for Fall
You don’t need to replace every pillow on your sofa just because fall has arrived.
Add one or two.
Mixing a pumpkin pillow with warm rust, cream, plaid or textured pillows can make your everyday sofa feel completely different.
I particularly like this idea because it’s inexpensive and easy to change again when the season is over.

4. Bring Fall Home Decorating to Your Front Porch
Your front porch is the first little hello your home gives people.
And fall may be my favorite season for decorating an entryway.
You certainly don’t need everything in the picture!
Start with a beautiful wreath.
Then, if you want a little more, add a couple of pumpkins, a pot of mums, a lantern or a pretty fall doormat.
I love mixing traditional orange pumpkins with cream and muted green ones. It feels softer and more interesting than covering everything in bright orange.

5. Easy Fall Home Decorating for Your Dining Table
This is one of my favorite looks.
A beautiful fall table doesn’t have to mean an elaborate tablescape that takes an hour to put together.
Start with a textured neutral table runner.
Then layer in pumpkins, candles, greenery, pinecones or branches.
I especially love the combination of:
Beige + natural wood + cream pumpkins + just a little orange.
It’s warm and inviting without feeling too busy.

And here’s another little decorating trick:
Use your regular dishes!
You don’t need a set of “fall dishes.”
Add a pretty napkin, a little leaf or a mini pumpkin at each place setting and suddenly your everyday dishes look seasonal.
6. Create a Beautiful Fall Centerpiece
Now we’re getting to one of my favorites.
A beautiful centerpiece can do most of the decorating for you.
Instead of putting little fall decorations everywhere, create one beautiful focal point.
I love the look of a long wooden bowl or tray filled with soft cream pumpkins and natural fall elements.
Try combining:
- Cream and ivory pumpkins
- A few soft orange or muted green pumpkins
- Pinecones
- Eucalyptus or greenery
- Fall leaves
- Dried grasses
- Candles
Don’t worry about making everything match perfectly.
Nature doesn’t match perfectly either — and somehow it always looks beautiful.

Put it on your dining table, coffee table, kitchen island or entry table and let it be the star.

Sometimes we keep adding things when the room was already finished three pumpkins ago.
7. Create ONE Cozy Fall Corner
If decorating the whole house sounds exhausting, don’t do it.
This may actually be my favorite fall home decorating tip.
Choose ONE corner.
Find a favorite chair.
Add a cozy throw.
Add a pillow.
Put a little table beside it with a candle, flowers or some fall branches.
Add a pumpkin or two.
And stop.
You now have a cozy fall corner.
You don’t have to decorate every room, every shelf and every available surface.
Sometimes one beautiful little spot makes the whole house feel different.
And if you happen to sit there with a cup of coffee and admire your handiwork?
Even better.
Shop Your House Before You Shop the Stores
Before you head out shopping, take another look around your house — and even outside.
Branches, leaves, dried grasses and interesting twigs can make gorgeous fall arrangements.
Put them into a vase you already own.
Bring out a basket and fill it with throws.
Move a wooden tray from the bedroom to the coffee table.
Pick up an inexpensive pot of mums at the grocery store.
Fall decorating doesn’t need to cost a fortune.
In fact, I think homes are much more interesting when they’re a combination of old things, new things, inexpensive finds and things we already love.
